The inscription on the John Charles McNeill historical marker reads, 'JOHN CHARLES MCNEILL. Notable North Carolina poet, 1874-1907. House in which he was born restored at his burial site 1 ½ miles west.' The following is an excerpt from a short McNeill biography that has been published by the State Library of North Carolina and the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. 'John Charles McNeill, poet, journalist, and lawyer, was born at Ellerslie, his father's farm near Wagram in Richmond (later Scotland) County.
